| Bradford Grow, 99, a retired Navy Rear Admiral who was a naval aviation pioneer and a decorated veteran of the Guadalcanal campaign of World War II, died February 11, 1999, in O'Fallon, Illinois. The cause of death was not reported. Admiral Grow, who became a Navy aviator in 1926, led a squadron of amphibious planes on a historic 1939 round-trip flight between San Diego and Panama without refueling to demonstrate the aircraft's capabilities. During World War II, he commanded aircraft carriers, including the Lexington, that served in the Pacific and European theaters. At Guadalcanal, Admiral Grow presided over the calm evacuation of the carrier Wasp as it sank under enemy fire. (http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/begrow.htm) |
